Project Description

An album of classics reinterpreted

In 1985 a man with a mighty voice left Kwa Mashu near Durban and guided by Jazz legend Victor Ntoni, the mighty voice began a journey that led to the nightclubs of Jozi, then national tours and television, through Africa, and finally soared abroad.

Zamo Mbatha is undoubtedly one of the most sought after singers in the music industry. Over three decades he has shared studios and stages with our country’s musical icons, most notably supporting Miriam Makeba for 14 years as her key vocalist, and working with Hugh Masekela, Caiphus Semenya, Lettie Khumalo, Brenda Fassie, Chicco Twala, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, PJ Powers, Kamazu and Stimela.

Zamo’s incredible vocal dexterity, steeped in the acapella Isicathamiya tradition and global experience sets him apart from the legion of other fine local singers. A superbly talented, yet immensely humble man and a true artist, Zamo’s music is a constant aural surprise and delight. Now, finally, Zamo has stepped into the richly deserved spotlight of a solo career.

In this peerless treatment of well-loved standards, both local and international, Zamo infuses African flavour and soul, to create a truly memorable crossover collection that’s both a melodic balm and wondrous, intricate listening experience.

“It’s an honour to rework these songs that I am so very fond of and hopefully do justice to their legacies and those of their composers,” says Zamo.

Apart from a featured collaboration with Tom Fox, ex-Bright Blue, the original singer of Weeping, and occasional subtle vocal percussion from Tlale Makhene, Zamo makes all the sounds you’ll hear on the album. He’s the lead, both sides of the duet, supporting vocalists, choir and orchestra.
On this sublime album, vocal master, Zamo interprets thirteen wonderful classics including Imagine by John Lennon, Nontsokolo by Dorothy Masuka, Ain’t no sunshine by Bill Withers and Asimbonanga by Johnny Clegg. Below is the track listing together with the names of those who made the songs famous.
More than simply excellent covers, this is an album that’s a melodic balm, an enthralling listening experience and a must-have for your music collection.
